2013 Resolution

I’ve decided to make a single resolution for 2013.

I resolve to be open to the work of the Holy Spirit in my life, that I may demonstrate more consistently the Fruit of the Spirit.

No, this is not some hyper-spiritual, Christianese, “Jesus Juke” remark.

This is genuine.

I’ve come to this conclusion:

  • All the things I have ever resolved to do in the past I have utterly failed to accomplish fairly quickly,
  • I can’t do anything in my own strength that will have an eternal impact, and
  • Any worthy resolutions can only truly be accomplished if God changes me.

Why don’t I exercise? I’m lazy.
Why do I eat too much? I lack self control.
Why do I not read as much as I should/could? Again, laziness.
Why don’t I spend more time getting to really know the people around me? I’m not as kind, good, and loving as I should be.

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!
(Galatians 5:22, 23 NLT)

Most of us don’t have the impact we could on this world because we are too self-focused.

I want this to see this changed in my life, and only God can do that.

As a result, my wife and I prayed for God to plan our New Years Day.

We kicked off the New Year with a great day helping some good friends get some much needed work done. They decided to thank us with lunch at McGuire’s Irish Pub (unnecessary, but I didn’t argue).

There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
(John 15:13 NLT)

Life is found in giving your life away!

I’m glad that Brooke and I were able to start the year off right—serving.

With true surrender to the Holy Spirit, we will experience a change in our lives we never thought possible… and that’s usually because we often think too highly of ourselves.

Believing for change!

Steve

  • How about you? Have you ever failed to fulfill any resolutions?
  • How about any successes?

P.S. Please ignore any commercials that may appear below. :)

New Year’s Day

2012.

It is here.
(I already changed my ringtone to New Year’s Day by U2 — the original music video is below of your viewing pleasure.)

We’ll find out if the Mayans were right.
We’ll find out if God will send His Son Jesus back this year.
We’ll find out if the economy will improve, or fall further.
We’ll find out who the next president of the United States of America is (unless the Mayans were right or Jesus comes back before November 4th, or both).
There will be a new team that is crowned NFL Super Bowl Champion, a new MLB World Series Champion, NBA Champion (which almost didn’t happen), and new Stanley Cup Champion (hopefully it is Boston, again! They’re looking good).
We could go on and on…

What will 2012 bring for you?

Whether you are ready or not, it’s here… the new year. You could always look at it as just another day in your life. But for many it symbolizes another chapter, stepping stone, or an opportunity to make changes, do something new, or a chance to improve on something already present… turning over a new leaf. How ever you choose to view a new year, let’s agree on one thing: Let’s make it the best year of our lives!

I am so excited for this new year. It will bring many challenges, many areas of growth, and hopefully many victories. We will be launching our new church, moving across town, making slight changes in our jobs, become a better blogger, read more books in one year than I ever have before, etc… and there will probably be some unexpected/unplanned announcements that will come throughout the year. But, whatever comes our way, we will continue to put our trust in the Lord, seek Him more than ever, and walk in obedience with all that He directs us to do.

I pray that 2012 will be the best year of your life!

Looking ahead with hope and anticipation…

Steve

Starting Fresh

Here we are! New home, new church, new youth ministry, new jobs, new city… time for a new blog! I have been faced with the reality that I don’t have the same accountability here in Pensacola like I had in Detroit. So, I need to make myself accountable to YOU! Yeah, you will help me (if you want to). So, what do you say? I’m up for the challenge… I hope that you join me in this journey as I seek to be stretched – learning and growing as we move forward in God’s plans for our lives. Much love!
